Submeasure 5.1.A

Submeasure 5.1.A

Investments to prevent the spread of the quarantine pathogen Xylella fastidiosa on olive trees

Beneficiaries

 The funding may be provided by:

  • farmers;
  • farmers' associations;
  • farms of public bodies.

The agricultural activity must take place within the Zone delimited by annoying Xylella fastidiosa, which includes the areas already infected by the pathogen and the buffer areas for the containment of the contagion.

The boundaries of the demarcated area are periodically updated by the Apulia Region, based on the progress or regression of the disease, as provided for in the Implementing Decision 2015/789/EU of the European Commission and subsequent amendments and additions.

Objectives

Safeguarding the Apulian olive-growing heritage and counteract the spread of Xylella fastidiosa.
31. 9% of the Apulian agricultural area is cultivated with olive trees (Source: Istat, 2011). In addition to the strong economic and identity value, the presence of the olive tree on the Apulian soil helps to limit the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, protect biodiversity and prevent phenomena of hydrogeological instability.
