The European Union's rural development policy is implemented through Rural Development Programmes (RDPs) drawn up by the Member States.

The Rural Development Programme is the main instrument of financing, programming and implementing of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) through which Apulia Region promotes interventions useful for developing the territory.
The Rural Development Programme allows to invest in knowledge and innovation, in the modernization processes of companies, in the growth and improvement of infrastructures; it allows to strengthen the collaboration between entrepreneurs and the diversification of activities, dedicating ample space to young people and to training.
Investment support is aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the business system, supporting the growth of the sector, improving the living conditions of local rural communities, safeguarding the environment of the territories, encouraging their balanced and sustainable development.
It was approved by the European Commission by decision C(2015) 8412 of 24 November 2015 and ratified by the Regional Council by Resolution no. 2424 of 30 December 2015 (BURP no. 3 of 19/01/2016).
The text was amended by Decision C(2017) 499 of 25 January 2017, C(2017) 3154 of 5 May 2017, C(2017) 5454 of 27 July 2017, C(2017) 7387 of 31 October 2017, C(2018) 5917 of 6 September 2018, C(2019) 9243 of 16 December 2019, C(2020) 8283 of 20 November 2020 and C(2021) 2595 of 9 April 2021.
In addition, formal amendments were made, submitted by the Managing Authority to the European Commission on 18 May 2017 and accepted on 30 May 2017, pursuant to art. 11 letter c) of EU Reg. 1305/2013.
The Decisions of the European Commission and the approval of version 6. 0 of the Rural Development Programme of the Apulia Region 2014-2022 have been ratified by the Regional Council with Resolution n. 356 of 18 March 2018 (BURP n. 41 of 23 03 2018). The version of RDP 8.0, amended pursuant to Reg. 1305/2013, art. 11, letter c, for purely material or editorial corrections, was adopted by the European Commission on 2 May 2019.
The programme consists of 14 measures to achieve 6 main objectives (Priorities), 18 more specific objectives (Focus Area) and 3 transversal objectives.
