Territory
The affected area covers an area of 92,600 square kilometers. It includes a territory characterized by protected natural areas that develop between the hilly areas of the Itria Valley and the coastal areas.
The coast, more than 100 km long, goes from the Plain of the Secular Olive Trees to the countryside of Brindisi.
Objectives
- Developing the care and protection of the landscape and of slow and conscious tourism;
- generating opportunities for territorial development, in terms of hospitality and agro-food promotion;
- planning actions in order to facilitate the connection between the towns of Upper Salento through the long-distance cycle routes (Apulian aqueduct cycle route and the ancient route of the Via Traiana, recognized by the Council of Europe as the Via Francigena of the South);
- promoting attention to environmental certifications and the recovery of existing buildings;
- encouraging the development of sustainable agriculture, in particular that linked to ancient varieties and production chains;
- promoting the birth and dissemination of food and wine tours and dedicated e-commerce;
- supporting nutrition education and the “multifunctionality" of fisheries.
